Why In-building Public Safety Communications?

 Reliable radio coverage is essential for first responders during emergencies, yet 56% of fire departments have experienced communications failure during an emergency incident within the last two years. If a building has areas where emergency radio signals are not sufficient for reliable communications, a distributed antenna system (DAS) will amplify and distribute the signals to the needed areas.   Examples of when a system failed are the 9/11 attacks, and Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

  • Emergency Responder Radio Coverage (ERRCS) systems that comply with building codes and fire safety ordinances for local jurisdictions as well as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1225) and International Fire Code (IFC 510).
  • In-building delivered audio quality (DAQ) grid testing & reporting.
  • Site surveys to verify building construction/materials, proposed equipment locations, existing pathways and cable routing for system designs.
  • BDA/DAS system & iBwave designs including predictive propagation heat maps.

We provide compliance testing for public safety radio systems to ensure that first responders are able to reliably communicate within the building during an emergency.


We utilize the PCTEL SeeHawk Touch & IBflex scanning receiver to prepare, test and certify properties for compliance with adopted regulatory standards and to determine the need for a public safety BDA/DAS.


When a building is found to have deficient signal levels, we use this test data to design a bi-directional amplifier (BDA) system or distributed antenna system (DAS) to improve coverage.

Why do I need to deploy a Public Safety BDA/DAS system?

  1. To enable In-Building communications to ensure firefighters, paramedics or police can communicate using their hand-held radio when in your building.
  2. The system is required by codes that mandate First-Responder communications coverage: International Fire Code IFC510, & National Fire Protection Association NFPA-1225 - 2022.
  3. Florida Statute 633.202.Existing buildings are not required to comply with minimum radio strength for fire department communications and two way radio system enhancement communications as required by the Florida Fire Prevention Code until January 1st, 2025. However, by January 1st, 2024, an existing building that is not in compliance with the requirements for minimum radio strength for fire department communications must apply for an appropriate permit for the required installation with the local government agency having jurisdiction, AHJ and must demonstrate that the building will become compliant by January 1st, 2025.  
  4. Systems are required by local AHJ's to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) for the building.
